January Favourites

I've never done a monthly favourites post before but this month, I noticed that there were a lot of new things that I was using and loving. I'm not sure if I'll be doing one of these every month but do let me know what you think!

  1. Book - The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
I had to start with a book because every time I think of my favourite things, a book I recently read often pops up in my head. I listen to Gretchen Rubin's podcast called Happier with Gretchen Rubin which in itself should be on this list. It's because of this podcast and a few others where I've heard her being interviewed that I decided to pick up her book on the subject of happiness. Something about it was appealing to me because like a true nerd, she'd methodically categorised and listed the areas of her life that she wanted to work on in order to improve her overall happiness. Now, she wasn't an unhappy person to begin with. She was in a loving relationship with her husband, had two beautiful daughters and was very close to her family. But she still felt that happiness was like an art and could be perfected with time and attention. She gave herself 12 areas of improvement and gave each area a month. It's brilliant!

  2. TV Show - Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
It was The Bromance who introduced us to this one. The second I found out that it was based on a novel series of the same name by Douglas Adams, I knew it was going to be good. The first episode had us hooked and ever since, Shane and I have spent many sleepless hours binge-watching as much of it as possible. I was late to get on board with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fad, as I only picked up the series last summer. Now, I'm a huge Douglas Adams fan. If you're into funny and entertaining science fiction, you're going to love this show.

  3. Game - Dots and Co
We're not people who spend a ridiculous amount of time playing games on our phones although I must admit that I'm on level 404 of Candy Crush. Okay, fine. Shane's not someone who spends a ridiculous amount of time playing games on his phone. However, he recently installed this game which has us both taking turns to play it. I refuse to install it on my own phone because I know how addictive it is. Almost every night before bed, we try to go up at least 3 levels. The design, music and everything about this is great. You can find this game in the App Store and Google Play, and thank me later for all the time you end up wasting because of this.

  4. Candle - Heyland and Whittle Jasmine & Lilac
This candle smells glorious. It's made out of 100% pure soy wax and I burn it almost every other night in bed while reading a book. I associate this scent with happiness, calm and contentment, and you need to try it out to know what I'm talking about.

  5. For the face - Vasanti Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
Girls (and boys), this is the face exfoliator that you've been searching for all your lives. I've never used anything like it. The micro-crystal exfoliators simply blew my mind. It's a Canadian product and is slightly on the pricier side but since it's not something you use every day but more as a pick-me-up for your skin every two or three days, it'll last you a long time. I use this right before putting on a face mask and sometimes after removing my make up to properly cleanse my skin. Amazing product!

  6. For the hands - Merci Handy Hand Cream
February and March are the coldest months in Edinburgh and as we hit minus temperatures, your hands need a lot of love. Especially my poor tiny hands that lived in tropical climates for over 23 years of my life. They get dry and crackly, and if you ever looked at them during the winters without looking at the rest of me, you'd easily believe that they belonged to a much older person. This product, first of all, smells amazing and makes me look forward to applying it. And it comes packed with tiny emollient pearls which melt into your palms upon application. I've never managed to find a hand cream that works this well for me.

  7. For the nails - Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream
While we're on the subject of hands, I want to address the condition of my cuticles. It's the same story all over again - dry, crackly, disgusting. This is more of a balm than a cream that works wonders on my cuticles and even my entire nails. After removing nail polish, I massage this product into my cuticles and nails and leave it on for a bit before applying a base coat. Although, I've noticed that since it's too creamy, it leaves a residue behind and makes your mani last shorter than it should. So before applying a new nail polish or base coat, be sure to remove any residue left behind by this product.

  8. Soul food - Wagamama
I admit that everyone knows and loves this chain restaurant but it took me this long to finally try them out. And let's just say that I'm drooling as I'm typing this post. I've always been a fan of Asian and Japanese cuisine and this one happens to be way too good to be a chain restaurant. I'm not sure if you can find this chain in India but my US, UK, UAE and European audience should be able to try it out.

  9. For the home - Method multi-surface cleaner
It's through the Method handwashes that I got introduced to this product. It's safe, environment-friendly, non-toxic, yadda yadda yadda, but can we please talk about the scent? This product leaves my surfaces and home smelling SO GOOD. And it's affordable too!

  10. Movie - La La Land
I know I've been forcing this upon you by having mentioned it in a bunch of previous posts this week but please do watch this Oscar-nominated movie. I can't stress this enough. Okay, I should stop myself from ranting about how good it is again.

That's all for this month. I hope you enjoyed this post and do let me know if you try out any of the items on my list. Also, in the comments below, could you mention at least one item from your favourites this month? I'd love to learn about and try new things :)
