December Playlist

Happy first day of the last month of this year, everyone!

It's the happiest day here at the Shankita household for no good reason other than the fact that we're going to start doing more Christmasy things now. We already broke out the hot chocolate and the box wines and the mulled wines and the boxed mulled wines. *Cough* Alcoholics! *Cough*

We have a few getaways, Christmas markets, cooking experiments, and lots and lots of quality time with friends to look forward to this month, and all that coupled with my little personal victory yesterday might have something to do with why we're both acting like this right now:

And what better way to share that happiness than through a happy playlist? That said, I'm going to warn you in advance that this playlist does not have even a single Christmas song in it. I'm sorry.

Like I shared last month, my system in creating these playlists is such that I keep adding the music I discover in any given month to the next month's playlist. So the music I have for you this month is what I discovered throughout November.

Only seven of the sixteen songs in this playlist are ones I discovered for the first time. So I thought I'll just quickly walk you through the rest of them, explaining how and why some of these songs ended up in here.

  • Should I Stay or Should I Go - The Clash

No surprises there! We watched Stranger Things Season 2 with The Bromance in the first week of November and that week was truly amazing. Not only do I love this song, but it also reminds me of happy times watching a cozy show.

  • Spanish

There are three Spanish songs in here, purely because I've been dancing to them this month. They all have different paces - the fastest number is by Ricky Martin, the moderately fast one is by Max Pizzolante, and the slow one is by Shakira.

I remember when I was younger, I'd listen to Ricky Martin's Un, dos, tres, Maria and Britney Spears' Baby One More Time and Crazy on repeat and dance to them. Can't say much has changed since then.

  • Covers

I'm usually very suspicious of covers because as a general rule, I prefer originals to duplicates. That's very snooty of me to say, but that's just how it is.

However, the two covers I have included in this playlist are, I feel, so good that I might even prefer them to the originals.

One is Regina Spektor's remastering of The Beatles' While My Guitar Gently Weeps. This is a song I heard for the first time through one of my dad's playlists so it's always been close to my heart. But the minute I heard this version in Kubo and the Two Strings, I immediately fell in love with it.

The second is Luciana Zogbi's cover of Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. I've been listening to her cover since 2015 and think she did an amazing job with it.

  • From the Movies

Two songs in this playlist were used in movies and shows I watched this month. The first being Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin which I loved in Thor: Ragnarok. I've included the remastered version that's used in the movie because, well, it left quite an impact. Who remembers this scene with the soundtack playing in the background?

The second is Supermassive Black Hole by Muse. I, unfortunately, can't remember which movie or show had used it but I'm sure I've heard it a lot of times.

The last one is I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor. She made a guest appearance on That 70's Show and the minute she started singing, I thought, "Wait, I've heard this song". Both the song as well as Fez's dancing are now my favourites.

So here's the full playlist on Spotify. I hope you enjoy some of the new ones I discovered by chance along with the ones that have a special significance to me :)

Oh, and happy weekend!
